There will be a PS Vita version of Sayonara Umihara Kawase released on April 23rd, running at 60 frames per second, with plans to add new stages, and the original SFC game included.

I can't wait for this, it will be great to play Sayonara at 60fps and those extras would just be the icing on the cake.

dodonpa

Well that's great news, except i'm not planning to buy a vita (although there are other games that caught my interest).

badlose

Good news but....

UNGH why'd I buy this worthless 3DS?!

Here's something I missed the first time I went through that source.  It refers to the four characters Umihara Kawase, Yokoyama Nokko, Kawase-chan and 'Yoshiko-chan'.

Has Emiko been renamed?

Maybe I need to import this issue of Famitsu.

In other news, one of the screenshots in the article on Famitsu's website shows the return of the squid and snail.

Nicole

I think it's just a typo. Emiko-chan's name in Japanese is "江美子ちゃん", whereas that site gives "美子ちゃん", dropping the first kanji.

texh

Holyyyyyyyyy ****!!!

Seems like official site just went up, showing some new pictures. SFC is looking really good, or maybe it's just me being too used to the tiny DS screen..
http://umichira.agatsuma-games.jp/

!!!!! Just noticed a very needed/pleasant addition to the SFC game!!!!!!!

KawaseFan

Yes!!

The site also lists Kiyoshi Sakai as the main programmer, so we don't have to worry about another PSP-like disaster.

badlose

Anyone want to join my party and kidnap Kiyoshi Sakai and force him to program Umihara Kawase for PC?  ;D

KawaseFan

KawaseFan

Kondo just made this post on the official Chirari Twitter account, with an image that he suggests people can use as their Twitter icon.  Since I don't have a Twitter account, I decided to resize it and use it as a placeholder image on our Chirari page until we have box art to put there.

I want this early purchase bonus figure!

Now I just need to know how I can get it - whether it's available to all, or only in certain stores.

KawaseFan

My copy of the Famitsu issue in which Chirari was revealed has just arrived, and it does appear that Emiko-chan has been renamed Yoshiko-chan.  It calls her 美子ちゃん, with よしこ above the kanji.

I don't know why they renamed her, but I've gone ahead and added it to the page.

KawaseFan

The February 12th issue of Dengeki PlayStation, which came out last week, has a short section on Chirari.

It calls her Emiko-chan.

I think you were right about it being a typo, Nicole.  I guess the next magazine article will be the tie-breaker.  Anyway I've removed the renaming bit from the page.

I sure hope we have something more exciting to talk about soon.  I'd love to have a look at one of the new fields!

Nicole

Confusing! Well, I guess that clears that up, then. But yeah! More information would definitely be nice.

badlose

So, who here has a Vita? If not, are you going to buy one for Chirari? I think I might have to pass this time  :'(

Nicole

I've got one, though its primary function is to collect dust at the moment. I wouldn't really recommend buying one unless there are other games on the Vita you're interested in.

KawaseFan

I got the Vita 2000 model not long after it was released here.  It's not a bad system, there were certainly enough games I was interested in to decide to get it, but not as many as some other systems right now.  Chirari will definitely help with that, though!

KawaseFan

Kondo has posted the finished version of the Chirari boxart illustration on the Chirari Twitter account.  Will I update the placeholder image we have on the site now?  Yes I will.

Nicole

Oh wow, that art actually looks pretty cool! It's a lot more dynamic than the usual boxart, which mostly just involves Umihara standing around, looking somewhere.

KawaseFan

#20
I agree.  It reminds me of the artwork Kondo used as the Stray Sheep Volume 5 cover.

It seems we have our first bit of retailer-specific pre-order bonus information.  This Amazon.co.jp listing makes mention of a bonus cleaning cloth.  Oddly, it's separate from a listing just for the game and the figure, which is ¥953 cheaper.  I guess for people who aren't interested in the cleaning cloth and want to save a bit of money?

About that figure, though, I had written on the site that "there doesn't yet seem to be information on whether this figure is exclusive to certain stores or available to all."  I've just had a look around a few online shops and most of them do mention the figure, so I'm removing that part.  One of the shops not mentioning it being Play-Asia, where I pre-ordered...

There's been a major update to the official site and an official trailer released!

The issue of Dengeki PlayStation released last week has two pages on Chirari.  So far, I've been able to work out that it says Chirari is PS Vita TV compatible, which I don't think was previously known - maybe I'd missed it, though.  It also refers to the quick restart feature rather than the quick retry that it's called by the title of the video from Famitsu linked in the previous post.  Not incredibly exciting, I know.  I'm going with Dengeki on this given the Emiko-chan/Yoshiko-chan situation Updated official site calls it quick retry.

Also, it has a section covering the history of the series, but it seems to be missing something... or am I just imagining things?

texh

Worth a mention the trailer also confirms that you can watch other players' replays yay!

Funny to see that abomination of a game omitted but I think it's just Sakai officially giving it status of disowned child so it all works out. Would be pretty awkward to include it among the rest tbh.

KawaseFan

I've been thinking about the part of the trailer about the rankings and how it has Vitas placed around the world.  Let's suggest for a moment that's a hint at an eventual worldwide release.  It makes me wonder if it would have worldwide rankings, rather than the region-based rankings of the 3DS version.  I also wonder if your name on the rankings would be your PSN name, rather than the 3DS version's name you put on your save file.  If so, those of us who import (or those who wait for a worldwide release) should share our PSN names so we know whose times to look out for.

Anyway, in less discussion-y and more why-am-I-looking-this-up-instead-of-sleeping news, the official site and the Amazon.co.jp listing now have a sample image of Amazon's bonus cleaning cloth, if anyone's interested.  Also, although they don't have a picture, the Sofmap listing mentions a bonus phone card, which sounds about right.

KawaseFan

#26
Speaking of phone cards, Trader have revealed the one they'll be offering, which shows the first Kawase artwork we saw for Chirari.

Also, although they don't yet have a picture, AmiAmi are offering a bonus mouse pad and guess where I'm pre-ordered now!  I'm not too sure if Play-Asia like you cancelling, though, but I have a friend with a bit of interest in the series so I might see if he wants that copy.

KawaseFan

Not that it really matters to those of us who aren't in Japan, but there will be preview events in Osaka and Nagoya in the next couple of weeks and, according to the latest tweet, are planning one in Tokyo in April.  They will also be giving people the double-sided poster that I thought was two separate posters, which was kind of dumb of me.

So anyway, with seven weeks until Chirari is released, who else is importing it?  I know badlose has said he may have to pass - which, by the way, badlose, maybe some time in the future when the Vita is cheaper and/or there are more games that interest you?

badlose

I don't think I'll ever get it. I've got enough games on PC to fit into my schedule, and I've already had my fill of Sayonara...despite whatever stage remixes and 60 fps are going to be in the Vita version.

Umihara Kawase

Just placed my order on amiami a few minutes ago. I was putting off preordering it, which usually bites me in the butt with amiami. But it totally worked out this time, because I would have missed out on the mousepad edition.

Nice!  The mouse pad looks really good with the pictures of SFC Kawase and modern Kawase in the SFC outfit.  I can't wait for it.

In other retailer-exclusive bonuses, Neowing/CDJapan have a bonus badge - only 12 pre-orders left available, though - WonderGOO have a bonus mini cushion and Takarajima have a bonus bromide.

Certainly a lot of these retailer-exclusive bonuses.  They're making it tough for collectors!

KawaseFan

Even more pre-order bonuses!  HMV.co.jp is offering an A4 clear file folder with an illustration of Kawase in a Lawson-themed outfit, and Imagine Web Shop has a bookstore card with an illustration of Kawase-chan, looks like she's about to go swimming.  I'd probably take the band-aid off first.  Also, a cat is wearing her backpack.

In other news, this post on Sweep Records' website about the upcoming M3-2015 Spring event reveals the Sayonara Umihara Kawase Chirari Soundtrack.

Nicole

Looks like it's confirmed for a western release! Apparently they're starting out with the reduced price point this time as well, which might help with sales.

Something that caught my eye, though, is that they mention Kiyoshi Sakai being the programmer of something called "The Mosquito". The first thing that came to mind was Mister Mosquito (Mr. Moskeeto in PAL regions), which was simply called "Mosquito" in Japan ("蚊"), but after watching the credits for that game, I didn't see his name anywhere. Not really sure what the deal is there.

KawaseFan

Why are the best announcements always made while I'm sleeping?

Awesome news!  Also, if it's Agatsuma handling it everywhere, even North America, it means no more of Yumi's Odd Odyssey.  Even better!

Nana

I am super stoked about this. I already have an import copy ordered through amiami (standard edition with just the weird little figure -- I don't really need any of those other preorder bonuses), but I'll probably buy my friends some copies of the NA edition to help support it.

I do wish Shun would come to North American PSN though, so that we can play all three games on the vita over here. Anyone wanna help me email some companies to try and get 'em to bring it over?  ;D

KawaseFan

#35
Are there any companies that could be interested, that would be able to release it in Europe and Australia as as well as North America?  If so, I'd be glad to help out.

---

Even though I couldn't see a Chirari page anywhere on the Japanese PlayStation site, I decided to try viewing the page for its game ID to see if it exists, and it does!  Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough before.

Anyway, two of the screenshots they have are of the profile screen, and while we knew from the worldwide announcement that there are now 60 stages, according to the screenshots there are now 70 doors - also an addition of 10 from Sayonara, suggesting none of the new stages have multiple doors - and five more backpacks bringing the total to 45.

That's got me stumped.  I had a look at the credits for Ka 2: Let's Go Hawaii - although you might have seen those credits too - but his name isn't there either, and I can't find any other game it could be referring to.

texh

Hmm? I always thought you could just make japanese account to get Shun but wouldn't mind spamming Saizensen if that's not the case.

The whole article felt pretty off with the Mosquito stuff and, heh, "brilliant KAWAII style art". Wonder who wrote that. Also nice find with the PS site, the new field with raccoon statue in background looks stellar!

Nana

#37
You can certainly make a japanese account, but I'm not too fond of the process for switching accounts on the vita (requiring two memory cards, a factory reset, and dealing with re-setting up every time).

It would just be awful nice to have everything together.

EDIT:
@Kawasefan: Well, Gungho/MonkeyPaw Games are the main two to contact, I believe. They're the ones that usually handle PS1 import games for EU/NA on PSN. Saizensen is the other one who needs to know people are interested, I believe, as they released the game on Japanese PSN, meaning they own the license for the game.

KawaseFan

#38
I've just sent MonkeyPaw Games an email.  Let's hope for a positive reply!  I'll try to send one to Studio Saizensen in the next couple of days, too.

A few Japanese game sites have put up articles - I'll link to the Famitsu article - revealing the last bonuses we didn't know about.  Pre-ordering at Seven Net gets people a bonus wallpaper for PC, iPhone and Android, while an Animate pre-order will come with a bromide featuring Kawase in a bikini.

KawaseFan

#39
SuperSweep have put up a news post on their site and a product page on their shop for the soundtrack.  It's a two-CD release, disc 1 has digitally remastered versions of SFC/Shun music (I'm presuming these are the same as the 'Sayonara arrangements' on the Sayonara soundtrack) as well as a few bonus versions of Sky Blue and Awakening Heartbeat, and disc 2 has the Sayonara/Chirari music.  They're in the same track orders as the Umihara Kawase / Sayonara soundtracks, which made my work on the track list easy.  Interestingly the news post mentions a bonus hand towel for orders made through the shop, while the shop page itself mentions a 'reprint strategy video DVD' - sounds like the Umihara Kawase Soundtrack Extra Disc to me - and 'other (planned)', which will probably be the hand towel.

On a related note, does anyone happen to know why the Umihara Kawase Soundtrack credits the 'River - Upstream' and 'River - Mountain Stream' tracks to Atsuhiro Motoyama, while the Sayonara soundtrack credits them to Shinji Tachikawa?

KawaseFan

No more news to tell at this point, but I just wanted to ask, now that it's been confirmed for a western release, who here will be getting that version?

Nicole

I might? It's hard to say right now because I have a huge backlog of games to get around to.

KawaseFan

#42
Yeah, fair enough, I know that feeling.  I've had to delay a few games or skip them entirely because of my backlog.  How big is your backlog?

---

The Australian Classification Board has given Sayonara Umihara Kawase + a G rating.  What's interesting to me is that, in the consumer advice, they say it has "very mild themes" while the rating for original Sayonara has no such advice.  What, just because the graphics are a bit better, suddenly it has mild themes?

KawaseFan

The official site has updated with technique and wallpaper pages.  The wallpapers come in 1920x1080, 1280x720 and 960x544 for use on your Vita.

Hey, just on a side note, what do you all think about us having a characters section on the site?  Not just for the player characters but for all the game enemies and if/how they behave differently between games.

KawaseFan

North Americans get two days at the top of the rankings!

Nicole

My backlog's basically around ten games I bought and started, but never bothered to actually finish before buying even more games. So yeah! I'd like to finish those before spending irresponsible amounts of money on video games again.

Nana

They actually went and did it. They made field 33 harder. Snails everywhere, man.

I'm going to need to buy the US release for support eventually, but for now I'll just stick with my Japanese physical copy. I am definitely surprised that US players are playing before me though. <_< It's not often the importer gets left behind...

Just out of curiosity, for those who have the game already - regarding the rankings, since it's one global rankings board, does it make any note of the region players are from?   Also, does it just use your PSN username or can you put in your own name like on 3DS?

badlose

So I've been meaning to ask, how is the Vita's D-Pad?

Better than 3DS/XL imo.

Curious about that too.

Comes out on 30th in PAL, if anyone's interested.

KawaseFan

Couldn't wait until the 30th!

It does let you put in your own name and does not specify region.  Also the menu that lets you download people's replays also lets you view their PSN profile.

Rankings seem really slow to load, or maybe it's just me.

The music in the original Umihara is wrong. In the section of fields that lead to field 42 that are supposed to play the Keiryu theme, it plays something else.

Other than that, this collection is pretty much perfect. New fields are great, especially 54, which is a huge pain in the ass. I also like the reworked pufferfish boss fight a lot more.

One weird oversight is that you can now just jump and grab the backpack in stage 17. You don't need to do anything special.

I notice one effect of the 60fps with the F24 rankings - the top time for that left door on 3DS was 1.56, so far on Vita it's 1.40!

Oh, so you can.  Interesting.  I guess if new fields like F54 are that hard, and with what they did to F33, maybe they felt like making some earlier things like F17's backpack a bit easier?

Awesome!  I've put a link to it on our Chirari information page.

Nana

Actually, has anyone completed field 54?

I've died 200 times now without a single clear. I'm right at the final door, but I can't pull off the last jump. This may be the toughest field I've played in an Umihara game. I'd like to see a replay.

KawaseFan

I reached F54 not too long ago, died around 15 times before the game got stuck at the loading screen forever.  Giving F54 a break until tomorrow.

Nana

This is an awesome site, gori.sh! Thanks for sharing. And for annihilating my records.

F54 - done.  I've put it up on YouTube if you'd still like to see a replay, Nana, or if anyone else is interested.  Just ignore where I messed up my button presses, please!

The best time on the rankings, by the way? 4.61.

Nana

Oh, uh, wow. I was approaching this in a completely different way.

I was going for a method that had the be pinpoint-precise for every jump. Shoot.

4.61 though...

Thanks for the advice, gori.sh.  It took a few tries, but I got 4.58.  Still a bit behind the current top time of 4.28, but I'll take it.

Also, what do you think, everyone - good place for a figure?

texh

Oh, so that's how it's done? I always tried to do jump, diagonally to the right and then diagonally to the left twice. Frankly, the success rate was a bit tragic but it did the work.

Nice spot, actually planned to the same except with Shun or Kanzenban since I don't have the original game.
Man,  who would've thought you would be able to put official figure there 20 years later? Neato!

KawaseFan

texh, I noticed you'd gone past me with 4.55, so...  4.50.

Your move!

texh

You know I can't let you have that - 4.46  :P

Replay is viewable in my profile.

Alc

Don't want to disrupt the friendly rivalry going on here (stunning times, btw!) but I have a question about the replay/ranking servers... are they dog slow for everyone else? I check record times for a level (in-game, I mean) and I might be sitting there for 15-30 seconds before they come in. Is this normal?

texh

Yep, same here. No clue what could be the issue but it's definitely on Agatsuma's (or whoever is handling the ranking servers) side.

KawaseFan

Yeah, it should have come in the figure package as a separate piece.

I guess I'll have to make do without it, since it's nowhere to be seen.  Thanks though.

KawaseFan

I tried to match Ramtieger's 3.86, but this is the best I can do.

texh

I planned to take a bit of brake from Sayonara but can't pass on such challenge now, can I.

So far my record is measly 3.90 but I'll be sure to give it another shot during next week.

KawaseFan

The official English site has been updated to be basically an English version of almost the full Japanese site - minus the pre-order bonus information, obviously.

According to Kawase-chan's profile, she and Emiko-chan almost drowned in a river once :(

Nicole

I forgot how bizarre a character Noko is in the context of the series. An undercover time cop from the future disguised as a schoolgirl who's on a secret mission that never actually gets explained or referenced outside of her character bio because the game has no story.

Like... where the hell did that come from??

Alc

It's a very, uh, Japanese game. One in which a giant tadpole lays baby frogs. Honestly by comparison to the weirdness in the levels, the time cop stuff just made me laugh. I thought the stockings/miniskirt outfit on the Emiko kid was pushing it a bit, but eh, that's the otaku thing, what can you do.

I'd love to see Chirari released on Steam, I can't imagine it'd be that much work and I think it'd be a good fit for Greenlight. Hell I'd buy it a second time just to be able to play it in a resolution greater than 480x272 or whatever godawful internal resolution it's running it at. I imagine it looks passable on a Vita screen but it looks really rough upscaled onto a 27" monitor on the Vita TV.

KawaseFan

I, too, would like to know what Kondo (and Sakai?) was on.

Alc, can we count you in on badlose's kidnap-Sakai-party?

I dunno, I don't really mind the Emiko character design, I think she's cute. Yeah, it's an otaku thing, but I'm okay with it. :) I'm probably a lot more okay with that kinda stuff because I'm really into anime and that kinda stuff is all over the place.

Also, Chirari released on Steam would be awesome. I can speak from experience here, owning an original Vita, that Sayonara Umihara Kawase + looks pretty darn good on the small screen, especially with that delicious OLED.  ;D

I was actually thinking of getting a Vita TV... so it's gonna look like garbage on my 42 inch then 'eh?

Yeah, you kind of have to make peace with it if you're going to watch anime or get into niche Japanese games. Still makes me uncomfortable, but that's probably just a knee-jerk reaction on my part, it's pretty tame as far as that stuff goes I suppose.

QuoteI was actually thinking of getting a Vita TV... so it's gonna look like garbage on my 42 inch then 'eh?
Honestly I think the game's visual style is pretty bad to begin with - the backgrounds look like placeholder art, but even the 3D character animations are a bit amateur-looking IMO. Chirari's cover is pretty poor too. Still, I get that the game has a credit roll that's all of ten people or something, so hey - corners get cut, but at least it plays well.

The resolution issues (upscaled jaggies) on a 42" TV will be quite a sight! The Vita TV is a neat little console though, and it's dirt cheap. You also get to use a proper Dualshock controller - given what you lot have been saying about the 3DS/Vita controls being a bit off that might be worth it alone, I don't know.

dodonpa

I managed to do 4.41 (F54). The funny thing is that i desperately tried to jump (while holding the rope) right after the first jump, and finally did it in a completely different and unexpected way. Which is similar to KawaseFan's approach...

KawaseFan

Good work.  I'm done with F54, 4.50 is my limit.

According to this week-old post on the official English Sayonara+ Twitter account that I forgot to check for a while, Sayonara+ will be 50% off from August 12th - 26th, and 3DS Sayonara is 50% off right now and until August 13th.
