Wonderful video, I enjoyed learning tidbits I didn't know. Had never heard of Densen before and am now sad lol

I'd recommend seeing if you can turn down the difficulty on Blade Strangers and going through at least the main four Umihara characters' story modes, as it's probably the most characterization they've ever gotten lol.

Thanks! So glad everyone enjoyed it! And that's a good idea, I might lower the difficulty and play through the story mode :) Also try and unlock her in Crystal Crisis too... I couldn't get my head around that game in time for the video! >.<

I and my friend did an episode of our podcast dedicated to the series!

We normally cover Donkey Kong related stuff but we've both just fallen so much in love with UK that we decided to dedicate an episode to it :)

Umihara Kawase Fresh! / About the story
Last post by imgibbon - February 21, 2021, 08:52:52 PM
So I was talking with a friend about this, but, like, I can't possibly be the only one who thought Sylvie and Gin were gonna end up being Kawase's folks, right?

- Sayonara establishes she doesn't have much memories of her childhoold at all.
- She used to have recurring dreams of this town that she drew a map of and then winds up in that town that she thought she'd made up.
- has hazy dreams/memories of Gin from when she was a kid and then finds out that he's Sylvie's missing husband.
- has nightmares seeming to indicate she's been here in Kingness before.
- one of the cat villagers is Shakemaru, the same name as the family cat of her childhood friend Emiko, and we know from Kotaro's whole... situation that some of them used to be ordinary housecats.
- the traumatic event she has fragmented memories of is of her sister 'dying', and it's what caused her to leave home and start wandering.
- and more stuff, this is just what came to mind off the top of my head.

Like... to me it all seemed eerily close to the old blogpost backstory about how Kawase had a missing father, deceased sister, and ended up accidentally working at her mother's restaurant before continuing her travels. Given that that backstory never actually made it into any of the classic games but  was alluded to in Sayonara and Blade Strangers, I thought for sure this was going to be, like, the "official" version of those events, finally put into the series canon.

And then they... didn't? But maybe they did? The phone call at the end is a little confusing about who she's talking to, along with the series' usual "some of this is representative of what's going on in Kawase's head" stuff making it a bit muddy as to what's real and what's not.

But, yeah, it's not just me, right?

Sayonara Umihara Kawase / Trophies on Vita are dumb
Last post by Princess Rescuer - February 10, 2021, 03:04:23 PM
It took me a while to post this due to not caring about trophies and being able to enjoy the games just fine not paying attention to them, but I think the trophies could have been better. Much better. Let me go over some of the trophies:

There are two trophies for failing. One for 20 times and one for 50 times. How are these supposed to reflect skill? Perseverance I suppose, but once you find these out, you can easily fail 50 times on purpose. And did I mention it has to be on the same field?

A trophy for watching all the tutorial videos. It would usually be the doing of a skilled player not to have to watch these.

A trophy for sharing a replay. Doesn't matter the quality of the replay. This one isn't challenging, just inconvenient.

In order to complete the trophies in the original game, all you need to do is complete the game once. You can do this on the Shortest Path and be done with it. No trophies for getting all 60 Golden Arrows though. There might as well have not even been trophies for the original game.

There's a trophy for listening to all the music after you unlock it. Don't know why.

Here's how I would have designed the trophies:

Getting All Unlocks and All Golden Arrows would have been all it takes to get all the trophies. Certainly no trophies that reward failing 50 times on the same field.

Possibly also add some for meeting certain time trial requirements, such as individual ones for clearing every Survival route in under 10 minutes or clearing all of them in a total of under 30 minutes or something.

Differentiate the characters so trophies can only be obtained by playing as Umi. It's too easy to use the advantages as it is.

Maybe even add in a Trophy for getting at least 100,000 points in the original? Maybe just 50,000? Maybe?

It just needs to be a test of skill and not random nonsense.

Awesome video, nice work!  And as someone who is also not that great at fighting games, I'm going to second imgibbon's suggestion regarding Blade Strangers.  There's not a huge amount of story, but definitely more than the first three games combined, haha.

Yeah they seem to have done a bit more than purely just tile editing, and have actually moved some stuff around. If I can figure out how to do that it'll really open things up for us heh.

Hrm, that is tough about the title screen...

This hack reuses two letters (A and M) twice each like Dig Dug, but they're in different positions and have different widths than the D and G. Maybe it would be worth giving it a look in yychr or a hex editor?
It doesn't seem as if any other hacks or translations of Dig Dug available on rh.net have made changes to the D and G, so this Yamame hack is the only precedent for that.

If that doesn't work, maybe I could vertically fit the kanji in the space of I and U...

Not sure where I'd need to look to grab the font though, but if you can point me in the right direction I can make an attempt for you
Try searching for bmp, gif, or png files in the Program Files (x86) -> Steam -> steamapps -> common -> (game name) folders. I doubt they would have the font nicely laid out like that, but if it's there, we're in luck.

So after some testing it does indeed reuse the D and the G for both DiG and DUG, so that makes things a little trickier.

And I do have the games on Steam! Not sure where I'd need to look to grab the font though, but if you can point me in the right direction I can make an attempt for you

No worries about work! You take all the time you need.
It's always so neat to see sprites I made put into a game. ^-^

1x

Here's some items for Kawase to collect. There were so many cool things I could've added that I honestly had trouble picking what to use.I may add in more if any of these didn't come out right.

In the meantime, I'll do the life backpack... and then I'll play around with ground tiles. Let me know how the logo is stored in the game so I can know how to tackle that.

Also, do you (or anyone else, if anyone would like to pitch in) have the Steam versions of any of the UK games? Apparently no one online has ripped the font, and it would be easiest to get it straight from the PC versions' files, if possible. If not, I'll just rip it myself from the SNES game.

I've been swamped with work lately, but I am totally still slowly working on this
