Title: Shun PC release on November 24th
Post by: KawaseFan on November 17, 2015, 06:49:40 AM
http://store.steampowered.com/app/384700

From the store page:
QuoteTotal of 3 'UmiharaKawase Shun' are in 1 package; UmiharaKawase Shun, UmiharaKawase Shun Second Edition, and UmiharaKawase Shun Second Edition Kanzenban!
Great news!

Like the PC version of original Umihara, this version will also add online rankings and Steam Workshop support for replay uploading.

I did get the date right the first time, didn't I?  Instead of being released on the 27th, Shun is out now.

Also, all three Umihara games are available in a bundle, for anyone who hasn't been buying them as they've been released.

For the sake of comparing them with the data of the original PSX ISO, do you think you could upload/list all the internal files of the game? I don't want the EXE, just the resources.

How is the port, boys and girls?

Seems pretty solid, but I've only played an hour (Dark Souls 2 on PS4 has me by the nuts right now, nothing else is getting much of a look in). It has a new continue mechanism, which I think works like this: for every 10 unique levels you've ever cleared, you get 1 extra continue. Interesting that they chose to add this to Shun but not the original.

There are some fun-sounding achievement challenges, too.

There's not much to see - there's an exe, half a dozen WAVs, and then all the rest of the assets are packed away in a file called "umires.arc", which despite the obvious extension won't open in any archiver I've tried (7zip, WinRAR, FreeARC).

I can see this early on in the file, when looking through it in a hex That's exactly what I'm looking for. It's a proprietary format but a very simple one. The SNES version's remake also used it.

It's basically just a package containing all the graphics re-encoded as DirectDraw Surfaces, all the models files, level files and some misc stuff.

There might be new/strange stuff hidden in. Think you could send me the file? I've ripped all the sprites (http://www.spriters-resource.com/playstation/umiharakawaseshun/) from the PSX version in the past, but getting into textures and models was something I wasn't able to do. They have been likely re-encoded to something more readable in the PC port, and I'm sure we've got a better chance at understanding the model/level formats too!

Does Umihara run too fast when doing the ground hook trick in this game's port and the first game's port or is it just me?

Sorry I haven't helped regarding information about the game files - due to various situations during the week I haven't even downloaded Shun yet, might be another few days yet before I can play it...

The achievements and continue option are taken from the DS version, although in that version the achievements unlocked artwork and music - are those artwork/music sections still in the game?

Yeah, the only other plain text stuff I could see in the hex editor was bits and pieces about Microsoft Direct Draw. Have fun digging in.

How do you play the game normally? On an older flatscreen TV, on an emulator maybe? Both could introduce lag that would make this port feel "snappier" if you're playing it on a modern PC monitor. It was one of the things I was worried about when they announced these ports, that they'd be laggy in some way, which would ruin it, really. I haven't spent much time with them yet but they seem fine to me, from the game engine perspective at least.

(I'll spare you my tedious RGB/CRT evangelism.)

KawaseFan - don't know about the art unlocks, I'll check later.

No gallery at all?  That's a shame.  Although some of the artwork in that gallery was what you see while playing anyway, I think it would've been cool to still have that gallery section there.  Gives me an idea for a future site page, though.

I suppose no music section wouldn't matter, with the music just being wav files for each game.

Thanks for checking.

I finally played Shun, and I'm surprised that even the occasional artwork between fields is gone!  I suppose people would prefer to keep going with the game without the breaks, though.

They were pretty tacky, don't miss 'em.

I started saving a few replays and noticed that the replays in this version don't show the door opening animation at the end.  Once it gets to the point where you pressed up at the door, it just goes straight back to the replay menu.  It's not a big deal, but it's kind of odd.

Hello, I'm Hitstun. I've only really played the third game, but I'm catching up with the others in the series.

As of today, all the Umihara Kawase games are no longer listed on Steam. We knew Agatsuma Entertainment was closing, but I didn't think the games would leave the store so soon. I hope everyone who wanted this game got it in the five weeks it was available.

Hi Hitstun, welcome.

This has been very disappointing news, and I join everyone hoping that another publisher re-releases the games one day.

Horrible news. I figured that finally, finally, Umihara Kawase was going to be available to those who wanted it, nice and easy. So sad.
